David Johnston is a prominent level designer known for creating some of the most iconic Counter-Strike maps, including the legendary Dust2.

Beginning his career at age 10 with Wolfenstein 3D level design, Johnston progressed through Doom and Quake before focusing on Half-Life and its modifications, particularly Counter-Strike and Team Fortress Classic.

His talent caught the attention of Gearbox Software during Counter-Strike: Condition Zero's development. While still studying in the UK, he worked remotely for Gearbox, creating two maps including "Tides" for the final game. He also designed levels for James Bond 007: Nightfire's PC version. Later, he contributed another map called "Sienna" to Condition Zero.

In 2007, Johnston joined Splash Damage as a level designer. He currently works at Improbable, having stepped away from level design. Despite retiring from Counter-Strike mapping, his legacy continues through Dust2's enduring popularity in the gaming community.

Notable Maps:

  • Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
    • Tides
    • Sienna
  • James Bond 007: Nightfire PC levels
  • Various custom Counter-Strike maps
