Mansion was one of the original Counter-Strike beta maps, first appearing in Beta 1.0 as a hostage rescue scenario. Designed by Magnus Lind at the request of Jess Cliffe, it was notably used in Counter-Strike's first-ever playtest in May 1999.

The map featured a two-story mansion with a large yard and unique gameplay elements:

  • 3 hostages (one on first floor near vending machine, two on second floor)
  • Sewer access route from CT spawn to backyard
  • Security monitoring system at CT spawn
  • Interactive light switches throughout the building
  • Dark hallway for tactical gameplay

While initially selected as one of four maps for Beta 1.0's release in June 1999, Mansion had a complicated history:

  • Removed in Beta 2.0
  • Reintroduced in Beta 3.0 with modified spawns
  • Permanently removed in Beta 4.0 due to design issues, particularly related to sniper positions and limited cover

Despite its removal, the map's legacy lived on through numerous unofficial remakes, including "Estate" which became an official map in Beta 6.5.

Notable features:

  • First CS map with comprehensive light switch system
  • Two security cameras monitoring second floor and front yard
  • Utilized unused Half-Life skybox texture
  • CT spawn area included monitoring screens for building interior
  • Small hut near CT spawn point

The map's design, while visually basic, provided engaging gameplay that inspired multiple community recreations, demonstrating its lasting impact on Counter-Strike's early development.
