Ido Magal is an influential figure in Counter-Strike's development, starting as a texture artist in July 1999. Originally from Israel, he began by helping create the official texture file (cstrike.wad) for the game.

After joining Valve Software in July 2001, Magal contributed significantly to Counter-Strike's evolution:

  • Created iconic maps including Chateau, Havana, and Piranesi
  • Worked as level designer for Counter-Strike: Source, redesigning classic maps like Dust and Aztec
  • Created Rockworld, an internal test map inspired by Iceworld

In 2007-2008, Magal and Matt T. Wood explored potential concepts for Counter-Strike 2, drawing inspiration from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, though this project was later shelved for Left 4 Dead development.

When Hidden Path Entertainment began porting Counter-Strike: Source to consoles in 2009, Magal recognized greater potential in the project. This led to the development of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, with Magal serving as project leader.

Professional Background:

  • UC Berkeley computer science dropout turned artist
  • Interests include photography, war literature, and foreign films
  • Previous work includes IBM/Crayola's 3D Castle Creator and C&C Red Alert 2

Currently, Magal continues supporting CS:GO and is likely serving as project lead for Counter-Strike 2, maintaining his influential role in the franchise's development.

Interesting note: In Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the Balkan model variant C is named "Ido" in his honor.
